2027 Elections: PDP Governors Hold Meeting as SDP Dismisses Merger Talks

Amid the disarray within Nigeria’s opposition parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has positioned itself as a significant player in the political arena. The party has emphasized its readiness to challenge the status quo, declaring that it is primed to bring about change in Nigeria. In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP revealed that its National Working Committee (NWC) has devised strategies to strengthen the party’s structures both locally and abroad. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the party is well-positioned for the 2027 elections, reinforcing its commitment to good governance, social justice, and inclusive development.

At the same time, Buba Galadima, a prominent member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), made waves by alleging that former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, who recently defected to the SDP from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is a mere placeholder for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the SDP. Galadima, who has been a vocal critic of Atiku Abubakar, former PDP presidential candidate, expressed disbelief that Atiku would consider working with el-Rufai. He pointed to the lack of political relevance of the former governor, citing his inability to secure substantial victories in Kaduna during his tenure as governor. Despite these claims, neither Atiku nor el-Rufai has publicly commented on the matter.

While some see the potential alliance between the PDP and the SDP as a tactical move, the SDP has strongly rejected the notion of a merger. The party declared its firm stance on maintaining a “clean slate,” distancing itself from any political arrangements that would compromise its ideological integrity. Instead, the SDP continues to position itself as a credible alternative, welcoming all Nigerians, especially youth and professionals, who are eager to contribute to the country’s progress.

However, the PDP appears to be struggling with internal division, which could impact its ability to mount a strong campaign for the 2027 elections. There are growing signs of discontent among PDP governors, some of whom are reportedly exploring alliances with the APC or other political coalitions. The ongoing crisis within the PDP, largely attributed to the influence of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and his allies in the party, has left the party’s leadership fractured. This lack of cohesion is raising concerns about the PDP’s readiness for the 2027 election.

On the ground, PDP governors have been meeting to discuss their options for the 2027 elections, including the possibility of a coalition with other opposition groups. Notably, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who attended a meeting at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, is also involved in these discussions. However, the absence of Atiku from these talks has raised questions about the future direction of the party.

In contrast, the Oodua Unity Group, a new coalition from the Southwest region, has emerged with the goal of advancing Yoruba interests in Nigeria. The group, which is non-partisan, aims to promote unity among Yoruba people and safeguard their culture, heritage, and socio-political interests. The group’s formation comes in the wake of rising calls for regionalism and self-determination, particularly within the Yoruba community.

Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has urged politicians to refrain from prematurely campaigning for the 2027 elections, given the ongoing socio-economic hardships facing the country. ACF Chairman, Mamman Mike Osuman, called on political leaders to prioritize governance and address the pressing needs of Nigerians, such as security and economic stability, before focusing on electoral ambitions.

The political landscape in Nigeria is rapidly evolving as various factions and coalitions prepare for the 2027 elections. While the SDP presents itself as an alternative to the PDP and APC, internal divisions and external pressures continue to shape the strategies of opposition parties. The coming months will be crucial in determining which alliances and political movements will dominate the national conversation leading up to the general elections.
