9ice Reveals How His Step-Mum Inspired His Use of Yoruba Proverbs in Music

Nigerian singer and songwriter 9ice, known for his unique incorporation of Yoruba proverbs in his songs, recently shared the inspiration behind this signature style. During an interview on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast with content creator Isbae U, 9ice clarified misconceptions about his music, attributing his use of proverbs to his late stepmother.

The talented artist, whose real name is Akande Abolore, emphasized that he is not an herbalist, as some rumors suggest. Instead, he revealed that his deep connection to Yoruba proverbs stems from lessons learned from his stepmother. He stated, “I am not an herbalist. I am a Yoruba man from Oyo state, and I learnt all the proverbs from my late stepmum. While trying to create songs, I decided to use all those.” This personal revelation showcases how familial influences shape an artist’s creativity and identity.

9ice’s career spans over a decade, during which he has produced numerous hits, including “Gongo Aso,” “Street Credibility,” and “No Be Mistake.” His breakout album, Gongo Aso, released in 2008, established him as a leading figure in the Nigerian music scene, earning him the title of Best Hip Hop Artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards that same year. The album also garnered multiple awards at the 2009 Hip Hop World Awards, highlighting his impactful presence in the industry.
