Five Ogun refugees give birth in Benin IDP camp

Five pregnant Nigerian women have been delivered of babies at a make-shift Internally Displaced Persons camp located at a community in the neighbouring Benin Republic.

It was gathered on Sunday that the women were part of hundreds of residents of troubled communities in Yewaland, Ogun State, who fled to Benin Republic following alleged deadly attacks by suspected herdsmen.

One of the women was said to have had her baby delivered through caesarean operation in a Benin Republic hospital.

The residents were said to have fled to Eegelu, Ipobe, Igana, Ibore, Owode-Benin and Iga communities in Benin Republic.

Two men, whose wives were part of those that relocated to the neighbouring country said that many villages, including Ohunbe, Asa, Agbon, Isuku, Kodera, Idelu, Iyana Meta, Ibeku, Eegelu, Ipobe, Igbo-Oko and Iganna, had been deserted my mostly women due to attacks by the suspected herdsmen.

Meanwhile, suspected herdsmen have kidnapped two traders in Ayetoro-Olorunda in Imala, Abeokuta-North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The abductors later demanded N5m ransom each from the two victims.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi said the command has arrested one of the suspected kidnappers.

He added that the suspect was a Fulani man.

He said, “We have arrested one of the kidnappers. We cannot confirm if they are Fulani herdsmen, the one we arrested is a Fulani man.

“He has confessed and said other members of the gang are around the Olohunda area. We are on their trail.

In a related development, operatives of Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspected herdsmen for setting ablaze houses in Bamajo village in Ayetoro, Yewa-South area of the state.

The suspects were also accused of inflicting machete cuts on one Ismaila Alabi during an attack on Thursday.

Oyeyemi disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Oyeyemi said, shortly after the attack, the police were joined by hunters and others to comb Igbo-Aje bush in Ayetoro, where the arsonists escaped to and nabbed the three suspects.

He said one of the suspects, Musa Yusuf, was apprehended with gun and a blood stained cutlass.

He said the two others, Usman Mohammed and Aliyu Abubakar, were also arrested in connection with the violent attack.

Oyeyemi said, “The injured victim was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

He also directed a massive manhunt for the rest arsonists with a view to bringing them to justice.
