68 dead, 702 infected as cholera ravages Abuja, Yobe, Katsina

About 68 persons have been confirmed dead as severe faecaloral gastrointestinal infection, cholera, hit communities in the nations capital, Abuja, Yobe and Katsina States.

But the Federal capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has begun intensive community sensitization as death toll in communities hit by the disease in the nation’s capital Abuja, rose from 54 to 60.

Minister of State in the FCT, Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, disclosed this at the continuation of community sensitization on cholera and other severe acute diarrhea diseases outbreaks in Pyakasa and Gwagwa, adding that cases of cholera infections have now risen from 604 to 698 within 72 hours.

The Minister, was represented by Acting executive Secretary of FCT Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Iwot Ndaeyo.

Aliyu described the ugly trend as ‘unacceptable in the FCT’, adding that, “the administration would not fold its hands and watch residents die helplessly over preventable diseases. We must take every necessary step to curb the further spread”.

She urged FCT residents and critical stakeholders to publicize the message of cholera prevention , proper sanitation with the practice of hand hygiene in their respective communities.
