Female group advocates empowerment of girls
A professional group, Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria, has called for the empowerment of girls.
The SWAN Chairperson, Mrs. Nwamara Nnaji, spoke on Saturday during a visit to the Holy Child College, Lagos, in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child.
The day, declared by the United Nations, is marked every October 11 to promote the rights of the girls and address the challenges they face.
Nnaji, who led members of her team to the college, donated 50 copies of different literature books to the school library.
“There are many benefits to empowerment of an individual and especially of girls. A girl-child, when empowered, leads to empowerment in all aspects of her identity, her boldness and confidence. it leads to empowerment in areas of authority, resources utilization, information dissemination and accountability.
“Empowered girls have the ability to take care of themselves without going cap in hand to beg for support from anyone, who may want to use that as an opportunity to take advantage of them, make their own decisions in the choice of profession to pursue, the kind of life partner that will be value adding and how best to raise her children if she does have them”, Nnaji added.
The President, Old Girls Association, Holy Child College, Mrs. Titilayo Akinsanya, commended SWAN for the visit.
