Best way to immortalize Ndubuisi Kanu is to fight for ideals he stood for – Ikpeazu
Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has said that the former military governor of old Imo State, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu fought against injustice and marginalization, stressing that the best way to immortalize the fallen statesman is to continue to fight for those ideals he stood for.
Ikpeazu, who stated this during the Commendation Service and Day of Tributes in honour of Kanu, explained that the fight against marginalization, injustice and hunger, which the former military governor championed must be continued.
“Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu was a man of battle, who fought against injustice and underdevelopment in the nation and ensured that democracy was entrenched.
Late Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu was a reservoir of experience, knowledge and wise counsel. His death is a huge loss to the people of Abia State and Nigeria at large. I thank the Governors of Imo and Lagos States for immortalizing late Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu by naming institutions after him”.
He announced that the Abia State Executive Council would take a decision on how best to immortalize Kanu and urged the Vice-Chancellor of the university to endow a Chair in the name of the late statesman for the studies of Strategic Studies and Sustainable Development at the university.
Ikpeazu also disclosed an annual grant of 5 million naira to be awarded to deserving Abia citizens in Kanu’s name for studies at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies.
Also speaking, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Awwal Gambo, who was represented by the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Yenogoa, Rear Admiral Obi Egbuchulam, described the deceased as a competent Naval Officer and astute administrator who distinguished himself credibly in the various offices he held, including being a member of the Supreme Military Council and Military Governor of the old Imo and Lagos States.
In his speech, the Chairman, Central Burial Committee and former governor of Imo state, Chief Ikedi Ohakim said the late Ndubuisi Kanu laid the master plan of the old Imo state, stressing that the deceased exhibited exemplary character in various positions he held.
In his tribute, the President Ohanaeze Ndigbo, represented by the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, said the contribution of the late Admiral to the development of Igbo land was legendary, including designing of Owerri Town.
Wife of the deceased Admiral, Chief Mrs. Gladys Kanu extolled her late husband as a man of strong character and a great Nigerian who will be missed by his family.
