Residents protest, barricade Katsina highway as gunmen kill seven

Angry residents in the early hours of Wednesday barricaded Funtua-Sheme highway in Katsina State over alleged killings in their communities by suspected bandits.

Commuters and other users of the road said the angry residents blocked the highway with debris, including stumps of trees and big stones while some protesters made bonfires on the barricaded portion of the highway.

Many travelers, especially those going to Sokoto, Zamfara and parts of Katsina States were stranded and delayed for hours.

A motorist claimed that the protesters blocked the road on Tuesday night.

“Some people slept here on Tuesday night”, he added.

It was learnt that security operatives, largely made up of troops of the Nigerian Army, later moved in to clear the highway.
