Cameroon Appoints Rigobert Song, Former Captain and Liverpool Defender as New Coach

Cameroon has named former Captain Rigobert Song as their new head coach replacing Toni Conceicao.

The 45-year old Conceicao guided the Indomitable Lions to bronze at the recently concluded Total Africa Cup of Nations but that was not enough according to the FA and government.

“On very high instructions from the President of the Republic, the coach of the men’s national football team, Mr Antonio Conceicao, has been replaced by Rigobert Song,” Cameroon’s sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi said.

“The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) is invited to take the necessary measures for a rapid and harmonious implementation of these very high directives.”

Song, the most capped Cameroon player with 137 caps also won the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations titles.

As player, he played at Liverpool and Westham United in England but also had stints in France, Turkey, Germany and Italy during his illustrious career.

His coaching experience includes handling Central African Republic and most recently the Cameroon U-21 side.
