National Grid Fully Restored Following Partial Disturbance – TCN
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Sunday that the national grid has been completely restored after experiencing a partial disturbance at approximately 11:21 a.m. Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, provided insights into the incident, stating that immediate restoration efforts were initiated as soon as the disturbance was detected.
The disruption occurred with Ibom power islanded feeding Eket, Ekim, Itu, and Uyo transmission substations. Prior to the incident, the total generation on the grid was recorded at 3,901.25 Mega Watts (MW). Mbah highlighted that low power generation has been a persistent challenge since January, further exacerbated by gas constraints.
According to reports from the National Control Centre (NCC), data from the Internet of Things (IoT) indicated that just before the partial disturbance, Sapele, Steam, and Egbin Substations experienced a loss of 29.32MW and 343.84MW at 11:20:14 hrs and 11:20:17hrs, respectively, totaling 373.16MW. This, coupled with ongoing gas constraints, contributed to the imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance.
Mbah emphasized the importance of addressing gas constraints to ensure grid stability, stating that sufficient generation capacity is crucial for effective grid management, particularly during unexpected disruptions. TCN has committed to investigating the root cause of the tripping of Sapele Steam and Egbin power-generating units to prevent similar incidents in the future.
