Eto’o’s Resignation Rejected: Cameroon Football Federation Stands Firm After AFCON 2023 Upset

Samuel Eto’o’s resignation as president of the Cameroon Football Federation following the Indomitable Lions’ disappointing 2-0 defeat to the Super Eagles at AFCON 2023 has been rejected by the federation’s executive committee.

Eto’o, facing allegations of improper conduct, match-fixing, and corruption, offered his resignation during a meeting convened to evaluate Cameroon’s performance at the tournament. Despite his invitation for other committee members to follow suit, the committee opted to maintain their current mandates and expressed unanimous confidence in Eto’o’s leadership to steer the nation’s football development as outlined in his plan adopted by the elective general assembly in December 2021.

The federation’s statement did not address the future of head coach Rigobert Song, leaving uncertainties looming over his tenure.

Cameroon’s journey in AFCON 2023 was marred by disappointment as they required a victory in their final group match to progress, only to be thwarted by Nigeria in the round of 16, marking a premature exit from the tournament.
