Talent Show Judge Nigel Lythgoe Faces Another Sexual Assault Lawsuit
Renowned US talent show judge and British TV producer Nigel Lythgoe is facing another sexual assault lawsuit, adding to previous allegations and legal battles.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, accuses the 74-year-old of sexual assault and battery against a woman in early spring 2018. Allegations detail that Lythgoe purportedly “groped her all over” after “pinning” her against a wall, leaving the victim feeling “horribly violated” and experiencing “severe emotional and psychological distress.” The incident is said to have significantly impacted her marriage, almost leading to divorce.
Lythgoe is confronted with claims including sexual assault/battery, gender violence, sexual harassment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress in the lawsuit, marking a continuation of legal challenges against him.
Earlier this year, Lythgoe announced his departure as a judge on “So You Think You Can Dance” amid prior lawsuits alleging sexual assault. Among the accusers is Paula Abdul, who asserts that Lythgoe groped her breasts and genitals and engaged in unwanted kissing during her tenure as a judge on “American Idol,” where Lythgoe served as a producer.
Representatives for Lythgoe have yet to comment on the latest allegation. However, in response to Abdul’s claims, Lythgoe’s legal team denounced the allegations as false, describing them as “the worst form of character assassination.”
Nicknamed “Nasty Nigel” for his blunt critiques on talent shows, Lythgoe’s departure from “So You Think You Can Dance” in January was accompanied by a dedication to clearing his name and restoring his reputation.
Lythgoe’s career spans executive production and judging roles on acclaimed talent shows such as “Pop Idol” and “American Idol,” though his legacy is now overshadowed by the string of sexual assault allegations against him.
Melissa Eubanks, senior counsel with Johnson & Johnson, remarked on the new lawsuit, highlighting the systemic issue of women facing repercussions for rejecting unwanted advances. Eubanks expressed hope for change, affirming support for women speaking out against harassment.
As Lythgoe confronts mounting legal challenges, the future of his career and reputation remains uncertain amidst ongoing legal proceedings and public scrutiny.
