“We Need to Promote African Music, Not Just Afrobeats” – Flavour Says

Nigerian music sensation Flavour, known for his vibrant fusion of cultural sounds, has made it clear that he does not consider himself an Afrobeats artist but rather an African artist. In a recent interview on The Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope, the superstar expressed his thoughts on the global focus on Afrobeats, emphasizing the importance of promoting the diversity of African music as a whole.

When asked about being left out of the conversation around Afrobeats’ biggest global exports, Flavour was unbothered, stating, “I am not an Afrobeats artist. I am an African artist.” He went on to highlight how the media often concentrates on Afrobeats, overlooking other rich and diverse musical genres across the African continent.

“Most times, the media just talk about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, you have to talk about Flavour,” he asserted. Flavour also referenced the current popstar Asake, whose music offers a contemporary twist on Fuji music, much like Flavour’s music, which incorporates various elements of Igbo culture.

Flavour’s dedication to representing African music beyond the Afrobeats genre is evident in his recent album, *African Royalty*, released in December 2023. The album showcases his commitment to celebrating African culture and has seen him collaborate with several other African artists, including Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platnumz.

Flavour’s message is clear: while Afrobeats is gaining global recognition, it is crucial to also uplift and celebrate the diverse array of music that Africa has to offer.
