Afrobeats Star Ayra Starr to Make Acting Debut in Nollywood
Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr is set to make her acting debut, joining the growing number of pop stars venturing into the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood. The 22-year-old Grammy-nominated artist will appear in Prime Video’s original film “Christmas In Lagos,” a romantic comedy that promises to be a festive hit. The movie also features a talented cast, including Teniola A. Aladese, Shalom C. Obiago, Rayxia Ojo, Shaffy Bello, and Adekunle Gold.
“Christmas In Lagos” tells the story of Fiyin, played by Teniola A. Aladese, who is recovering from a recent heartbreak. She believes her best friend, Elo, portrayed by Shalom C. Obiago, might actually be the love of her life. The film, set against the vibrant backdrop of Lagos, is directed by Jadesola Osiberu, known for her knack for capturing the essence of Nigerian culture in her work.
Jadesola Osiberu shared with Variety her excitement about casting Ayra Starr, saying, “For me, Ayra Starr represents what it means to be young and female and daring and brave and fearless – just being yourself. She was on the list from day one.” This marks a new chapter for Ayra Starr, showcasing her versatility beyond music and into the realm of acting.
The film also features cameos from other musicians such as Wurld and Liya, adding a musical flair to the movie. The soundtrack is set to be just as exciting, featuring songs from legendary artist Sunny Ade, as well as Afrobeats stars Flavour and D’banj, among others.
