Islamic Singer Rukayat Gawat Passes Away, Buried in Ogun State
Nigerian Islamic singer Rukayat Gawat Oyefeso has passed away, and her burial is scheduled for Tuesday in Ogun State. Earlier reports confirmed her death, prompting a wave of tributes from fans and associates who admired her work in the Islamic music community.
On Tuesday, the Janazah prayer, or prayer for the deceased, was conducted in Ojota, Lagos State. The service was streamed live on TikTok, allowing many to join in honoring her memory. Following this prayer, it was announced that the final rites would take place at noon in Ijebu Aiyepe, Ogun State.
YAYI TV, a popular Islamic channel on social media and YouTube, also shared the news of her passing in a heartfelt post on Facebook. The message read, “Alh. Rukayat Gawat is no more. May Allah be pleased with her – Amin.” The confirmation of her funeral arrangements reflects the deep impact she had within her community.
Jubril Gawat, the brother of the late singer and a Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Lagos State Governor, shared a poignant verse from the Quran on his social media account, expressing the grief felt by her family and friends. His post, which quoted “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return” (Q 2 V 156), resonated with many, garnering sympathy and condolences from followers.
Rukayat Gawat was renowned for her beautiful voice and the religious themes in her music, which deeply touched the hearts of many in the Muslim community. She had recently commemorated a significant family milestone, holding a 12-year remembrance for her father, the popular Islamic presenter Aremu Gawat, who has been missing since July 2012.
