Police Release Speed Darlington After Arrest Over Burna Boy Complaint

Controversial media figure, Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington, has been released from police custody after being detained following a defamation complaint filed by Nigerian superstar Burna Boy. The release occurred after Darlington met his bail conditions on Tuesday, as confirmed by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju through a post on his X page.

Speed Darlington’s arrest occurred last Friday in Lagos before he was transferred to Abuja. The arrest followed a formal complaint filed by Burna Boy, who accused him of defamation and cyberstalking. The allegations arose after Darlington questioned the legitimacy of Burna Boy’s Grammy win for his acclaimed album Twice As Tall in a viral video. In the video, Darlington also alluded to Burna Boy’s ties with embattled American rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is currently facing multiple serious allegations, including sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

Darlington’s remarks stirred controversy as he repeatedly insinuated that Burna Boy’s success might have been influenced by external factors, further fueling tensions between the two. Burna Boy, who has long been celebrated for his contributions to Afrobeats and international recognition, took the issue seriously enough to involve law enforcement, leading to Darlington’s arrest.
