Suspended Actress Nkechi Blessing Apologizes to TAMPAN Amid Public Appeal

Suspended Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing has publicly apologized to the Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners of Nigeria (TAMPAN), expressing deep remorse over her previous criticisms of the organization. This apology marks a significant step as Blessing aims to reconcile with the body representing Yoruba actors and filmmakers in Nigeria.

The actress’s apology comes three years after her suspension following a public dispute with fellow actor Lege Maimi over the child abuse allegations against Baba Ijesha. Nkechi Blessing and actress Iyabo Ojo had both strongly condemned Baba Ijesha’s actions, which led to a backlash from some TAMPAN members, including Yomi Fabiyi and Lege Maimi. At the time, TAMPAN officials, led by veteran actor Jide Kosoko, had instructed directors to cease working with Blessing and Ojo, a decision that Blessing had previously criticized.

During the 2024 Celebrities Entertainment Awards held in Canada, Nkechi Blessing seized the moment to express her apology. In an emotional video that circulated widely on social media, she tearfully addressed TAMPAN, saying, “I am so sorry for all that I did. I’m begging from the bottom of my heart; I miss the industry. You all made me who I am today. I’m being celebrated all over the world because of you. Please, I’m sorry.”

Her heartfelt appeal was met with positive responses. TAMPAN president Mr. Latin acknowledged the sincerity of her apology, hinting at a possible reconciliation. Fellow Nollywood star Odunlade Adekola also commended her courage in addressing the past publicly.

This apology highlights a step toward healing within TAMPAN, especially as Baba Ijesha’s case concluded in July 2022 with his prison sentencing. Following the resolution of the case, Nkechi Blessing’s public appeal may represent a new chapter, potentially mending old wounds and restoring her ties with the Nigerian film industry.
