Timi Dakolo Reflects on Becoming a Musician by Chance
Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has shared insights into his unexpected journey into professional music, describing himself as an “accidental musician.”
In a recent episode of the On The Record podcast, the Great Nation singer revealed that music was initially a hobby, not a career aspiration. His early exposure to music began during family morning devotions and singing in the choir.
“I used to just like that I sang,” Dakolo reminisced. “The first idea of music was during morning devotion. Then we started singing street songs, writing them in notebooks, and trying to impress girls. Music was not something I thought I would do professionally.”
Dakolo’s perspective shifted after his victory in the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007. The win marked a turning point, prompting him to pursue music as a career.
“I said to myself, ‘Okay, we are here. Sometimes you meet your destiny on the road you take to avoid it,’” he said, reflecting on how his path to music unfolded unexpectedly.
Timi Dakolo’s journey from casual singing to becoming one of Nigeria’s most celebrated artists underscores the unpredictable nature of destiny and the transformative power of opportunity.
