Peter Obi Alleges Threats to His Life Over Economic Comments

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns about threats to his life and family following his New Year message, which criticized Nigeria’s economic and security situation. Obi disclosed this in a statement shared on his verified Twitter account on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The former Anambra State Governor revealed that he has received various threatening messages, which he believes stem from his critique of the Federal Government’s handling of the economy and security. In his New Year message, Obi asserted that Nigeria remains one of the world’s poverty capitals despite government claims of economic improvement. He also highlighted the displacement of families due to banditry and terrorism, describing Nigeria as one of the least peaceful countries globally.

Obi further criticized President Bola Tinubu for frequent overseas trips, urging him to conduct his medical examinations in Nigeria. According to Obi, Tinubu has spent over 180 of his 580 days in office on more than 30 publicly recorded trips abroad.

Reacting to Obi’s comments, Felix Morka, the spokesperson for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accused him of overstepping boundaries. Speaking on Arise Television, Morka said, “Peter Obi is crossing the line. The campaigns are over; he needs to relax and allow his lawyers to handle his case at the tribunal. Accusing the APC of attacking his personal life is ridiculous.”

In response, Obi questioned what boundaries he had crossed, resharing his New Year message and inviting Nigerians to review it. “Have I really crossed the line?” he asked, adding that he remains committed to speaking truthfully about Nigeria’s challenges.

Obi also expressed concern over what he described as Nigeria’s descent into an authoritarian regime, where freedom of expression is increasingly suppressed. Despite the threats, he vowed to continue advocating for transparency and accountability in governance.
