Adewale Elesho: Gaining Popularity from Birth as an Albino

Adewale Adeoye, famously known as Elesho, a veteran Nollywood actor celebrated for his humorous roles in Yoruba movies, recently shared his unique journey to popularity. In an interview with media personality Adedoyin Kukoyi, Elesho revealed that he gained widespread recognition from birth due to his albinism.

Elesho’s birth was a significant event in his community because it was uncommon for parents with different complexions to have an albino child. He recounted, “I became popular since my birth. The news got everywhere that a white man was born. Some would scold their wards for coming to our house because they had given birth to an albino. Some would even wonder if I’m Chinese. Many people came to look at me out of curiosity.”

The actor’s birth was also a challenging time for his mother. Born in a hospital in Ibadan, Elesho’s mother, who was dark-complexioned and a trainer selling breakable plates supplied by Lebanese merchants, wept due to the suspicions that might arise. She feared people would think she had an affair with a Lebanese man. However, Elesho’s father was jubilant upon seeing him, as he resembled his grandmother.

Elesho narrated how his elder brother, Yekinni Adebola, used to defend him fiercely when others called him an albino. It was only when Elesho embraced his identity that his brother realized he didn’t see it as a challenge. This acceptance played a crucial role in Elesho’s confidence and public persona.

Discussing his entry into acting, Adeoye credited his father, a chief in the Ikirun area of Osun State, for inspiring his oratory skills. “I can say it was from my father’s character that I inherited the ability to talk. My father was an embodiment of happiness. He was always happy. When the chief was greeted at that time: ‘May the chief live long,’ he would respond: ‘May the natives not get sick too.’ He always had a reply to everything said to him.”

Adeoye’s natural talent and wisdom, which he attributes to divine inspiration, helped him carve a niche in the entertainment industry. His legacy continues through his son, Yemi Elesho, a popular skit maker known for his comedy roles. Yemi began his journey to stardom in 2016 with the help of fellow comedian Arole, who introduced him to Instagram skit making.
