Afenifere Commends Tinubu for Naming FCT Highway After Soyinka

Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his decision to name the Arterial Road N20 in the Federal Capital Territory after Prof. Wole Soyinka. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Jare Ajayi, Afenifere expressed appreciation for the president’s gesture. Ajayi described the honor as well-deserved, stating that Afenifere agrees with the President that the literary icon has brought Nigeria fame, pride, and international recognition.

President Tinubu’s decision to name the just inaugurated arterial road N20 from the northern parkway to the north outer expressway (ONEX) in the federal capital territory (FCT) as the Wole Soyinka Highway was commended by Afenifere. This recognition, according to Ajayi, is a befitting prelude to celebrating the Professor’s 90th birthday next week. Additionally, Afenifere praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for suggesting to President Tinubu that the road be named after Soyinka. The organization emphasized that such actions were improving Abuja’s aesthetics and infrastructure.

Moreover, Ajayi noted that national honors for a man who has long been a global citizen were overdue, highlighting the immense contributions Soyinka has made locally, nationally, and internationally to ennobling humanity. Despite the belated nature of the recognition, Ajayi asserted that it is better late than never. He urged Nigerian leaders to emulate Soyinka’s example and prioritize actions that alleviate the suffering of the populace while boosting their sense of self-value. In conclusion, Afenifere’s statement underscores the importance of honoring individuals like Soyinka who have made significant contributions to society.
