Akpabio Slams Natasha Akpoti for Misleading Claims at UN Meeting
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticized Senator Natasha Akpoti for allegedly distorting facts and misrepresenting Nigeria’s Senate at a United Nations (UN) meeting. Akpabio accused Akpoti of embarrassing the country by making misleading statements about her suspension over sexual harassment allegations.
During her appearance at the UN Internet-Parliamentary Conference in New York on March 12, Akpoti claimed that the Nigerian Senate had suspended her due to her allegations against Akpabio. Her remarks quickly gained international attention, sparking controversy both within Nigeria and beyond.
Reacting during a Senate plenary session on March 13, Akpabio expressed his dissatisfaction with Akpoti’s claims, stating that they misrepresented the situation and unfairly portrayed the Senate. He maintained that her assertions did not reflect the truth and could harm the institution’s credibility.
“I am aware that she distorted the facts and globalized the matter, embarrassing the Senate by giving a different narrative. I appreciate Hon. Kafilat for stepping forward to clarify to the international media that what was presented was completely different from reality,” Akpabio stated.
He further criticized Akpoti for bypassing due process, noting that while she initially submitted her petition to the Senate, she later took the case to court and then to an international forum. According to Akpabio, such actions could have long-term consequences, particularly in discouraging the appointment of women to key political positions.
“She brought the matter before the Senate through a petition but did not allow us to examine it. Instead, she took it to court and later to the international community. Actions like these could discourage politicians from appointing women into key positions,” he added.
Akpoti’s remarks at the UN continue to fuel debate, with Nigerians expressing mixed reactions over the potential impact of her statements on the country’s political landscape.
