Alaafin of Oyo Announces Official Title Ahead of Coronation

The newly selected Alaafin of Oyo, Prince Akeem Owoade, has officially declared his royal title ahead of his ascension to the throne. In a statement released from the palace, he confirmed that he will be addressed as His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo.

The palace emphasized that the numeral “I” in his title is a Roman numeral and should not be mistaken for the English number “1.” The public and media have been urged to adhere strictly to this official naming format without any modifications.

This announcement follows the commencement of the 21-day traditional rites, known as ‘Oro Ipebi,’ a crucial ritual before his formal ascension. The rites began on March 7 and will conclude on March 29, during which a nightly curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM has been enforced across Oyo town.

The curfew is a customary practice, and anyone found violating the restrictions will be detained until morning. This period of seclusion is an essential tradition for the incoming Alaafin and must be respected by all.
