Alex Iwobi Opens Up About Social Media Break Amid Online Abuse After AFCON Loss

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has taken a step back from social media following a wave of online abuse directed at him after Nigeria’s loss to Ivory Coast in the AFCON 2023 final.

Despite the disappointment on the pitch, Iwobi faced further scrutiny and negativity online, prompting him to clear his Instagram page of all posts as hurtful comments flooded his accounts.

In response to the relentless trolling, Iwobi made the decision to distance himself from social media platforms, admitting, “I’ve taken myself off social media. I’m not aware of what’s going on.”

Upon the team’s return to Nigeria, Iwobi received support from the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Owan Enoh, who acknowledged the toll cyberbullying had taken on the player.

In a candid moment, Iwobi expressed gratitude for the support he received from his fellow Super Eagles players, past and present, as well as Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala. United in their condemnation of cyberbullying, the Super Eagles team has stood by Iwobi, advocating for an end to online abuse in sports.
