Amaechi Warns Nigerians: Politicians Won’t Hand Over Power Easily

Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has issued a serious warning to Nigerians, stating that President Bola Tinubu will not easily relinquish power to the younger generation. He emphasized that politicians are often willing to go to extreme lengths to maintain their hold on power.

Speaking at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development, Amaechi explained that the Nigerian political elite would not simply hand over power, regardless of public demand for change. Drawing from past experiences in both Nigeria and Ghana, he highlighted how power struggles often involve significant sacrifices.

“None of you here can defend the votes,” Amaechi stated, adding, “If you have complained, complain, Nigerians have been clapping for you. The only way Ibrahim Shekarau became governor was because people lined up.” He further pointed out that the same determination was seen in Ghana’s recent presidential election, where citizens were prepared to die for their vote.

Amaechi underscored that Nigerian politicians will fight to keep power, even resorting to theft and violence. “The politician in Nigeria is there to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power,” he declared. “If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time.”

Reflecting on the 2015 presidential election, Amaechi praised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its preparedness and commitment to defending its mandate, a factor he believed led to the peaceful concession of defeat by former President Goodluck Jonathan. He urged Nigerians to adopt similar vigilance in future elections to safeguard their democracy.
