American Comedian Druski Faces Backlash for Skit Portraying Nigerians as Scammers

American comedian Druski is facing intense criticism from Nigerians on social media after releasing a controversial skit that portrays Nigerian characters as scammers. The skit, titled African Scammers Be Living Their Best Life, depicts a character named Baba Oluwatosin engaging in fraudulent activities to steal people’s money. The video, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on October 21, 2024, also features Nigerian currency (Naira) and ATM cards, further highlighting the association with Nigeria.

The skit has sparked widespread outrage, particularly among Nigerians, many of whom accuse Druski of reinforcing negative stereotypes. One social media user voiced their displeasure, demanding, “We don’t find this trash skit funny, please delete before morning, thank you.” Social media personality Daniel Regha also condemned the video, stating, “This is beyond insensitive; Nigerians are often labelled scammers just based on our nationality, without any reason or proof, & u are furthering the stereotype with this ill content.”

Several others echoed similar sentiments, criticizing Druski for perpetuating harmful narratives about Nigerians. One commenter remarked, “Druski, I love you and everything you do but this isn’t it brodie… Do better broski,” expressing disappointment that such content came from someone who had spent time in Nigeria.

The consensus among Nigerian critics is that the skit not only reinforces negative perceptions of Nigerians but also misses an opportunity to showcase more positive aspects of Nigerian culture. Another X user lamented, “There’s already a terrible stereotype of Nigerians being scammers, doing this is only reinforcing that narrative.”

At the time of this report, Druski has not responded to the growing backlash.
