Anambra State Expands HIV Services to 175 Healthcare Facilities Across the State
The Anambra State Government, through its Ministry of Health, has made significant progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS by extending comprehensive services to 175 healthcare facilities across the state. This move is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat the HIV epidemic and improve healthcare access for its residents.
In a recent update, State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, revealed that in 2024 alone, over 257,953 individuals were tested for HIV. Of these, 3,138 tested positive for the virus, and an impressive 99% were successfully linked to treatment. This high success rate highlights the effectiveness of the state’s efforts in ensuring that individuals receive the care they need.
The 2024 World AIDS Day theme, “Take the Rights Path, Sustain HIV Response, Stop HIV Among Children,” was commemorated with reflections on the state’s achievements and the challenges ahead in pursuing an AIDS-free Anambra by 2030. Dr. Obidike stressed the importance of continuing the fight against HIV and ensuring that every individual, regardless of their status, has access to necessary care and support.
A key part of Anambra’s HIV response includes the placement of 49,067 individuals on Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART) and the distribution of condoms and lubricants as part of prevention efforts. These measures are a direct result of the state’s commitment to inclusive, rights-based approaches and effective partnerships with various organizations.
Dr. Obidike also praised the success of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) program, which has played a crucial role in preventing new infections. Efforts to reduce stigma, discrimination, and other barriers to care were highlighted as essential steps toward achieving better health outcomes for people living with HIV in the state.
The government’s proactive initiatives, such as the domestication of the HIV Anti-Discrimination Act, underline its commitment to protecting the rights of people living with HIV. Despite ongoing challenges such as stigma and gender-based violence, Anambra remains determined to ensure health equity for all residents and work towards an AIDS-free future.
Dr. Obidike also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of government officials and organizations within the HIV response sector, urging a renewed commitment to ensuring that all individuals in Anambra have access to care, support, and dignity, regardless of their HIV status.
