Andy Boyo to Bring Fela Kuti’s Iconic Life to the Big Screen
Renowned Nigerian movie director and Directors Guild of Nigeria patron, Andy Boyo, has revealed his upcoming project: a biographical film about the legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Boyo, known for successful films like *Untamed* and *Spirit of Assassins*, shared that this movie, long in the making, is a “labour of love,” dedicated to celebrating Fela’s extraordinary life, music, and legacy.
Boyo recounted his early fascination with Fela, which even led to his expulsion from school. He recalled sneaking out of Glorious College in Ibadan to watch Fela perform at the University of Ibadan’s “Havana Night.” The adventure came at a price, as Boyo faced expulsion for his devotion to the Afrobeat icon. He reflected on Fela’s impact on his life, describing him as a mentor and a source of inspiration.
The highly anticipated film will dive into the essence of Fela’s life—his struggles, victories, and influence as a musician and political activist. After three years of planning, Boyo has secured the rights to Fela’s music, allowing the film to authentically portray his groundbreaking Afrobeat sound, which blends West African rhythms with American funk and jazz. The project is set to begin filming in 2025, with locations in Nigeria, the UK, and the US, and will feature a star-studded cast, including 27 actresses portraying Fela’s wives, reflecting his unique lifestyle.
Boyo’s commitment to the project highlights his dedication to honoring Fela’s cultural impact. With a vision to challenge and transform African cinema, this film aims to offer an authentic portrayal of Fela’s life, drawing global audiences into the powerful legacy of the Afrobeat legend.
