Ayra Starr Dominates Spotify as Most Streamed Female Artist in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has made history by becoming the most-streamed female artist in three African countries—Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya—according to Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped findings. This milestone highlights Starr’s significant influence in Sub-Saharan Africa’s music scene and her growing global presence.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, announced the achievement on Saturday, emphasizing how Starr’s dominance across these territories showcases her widespread appeal. In Nigeria, Starr topped the list, ahead of artists like Tems, Qing Madi, Billie Eilish, and SZA. Similarly, in Ghana, Ayra Starr led the rankings, with Tems and SZA following closely behind. Kenyan listeners also favored her, ranking her as the top female artist alongside global stars like SZA and Rihanna.

This dominance reflects the rising global footprint of Afrobeats, especially the genre’s leading female voices. Okumu noted the increasing recognition of Nigerian female artists in global music spaces, stating, “When it comes to Sub-Saharan Africa’s most streamed female artists, there’s no overlooking the allure of Nigerian icons.”

Ayra Starr’s success is largely attributed to her album The Year I Turned 21 and her international tour, which helped solidify her place as a major figure in the industry. Her blend of soulful Afropop and R&B has resonated deeply with audiences across Africa, contributing to her rapid rise.

In addition to Ayra Starr, other Nigerian artists like Tems, Tiwa Savage, Bloody Civilian, and rising stars such as Qing Madi, Simi, and FAVE also gained significant traction on Spotify. Tems, who secured the second spot in Nigeria and Ghana and the fourth spot in Kenya, continues to be a dominant force in global music, further cementing Nigeria’s leadership in the African music industry.

Spotify also highlighted the impact of its EQUAL Africa program, which supports female artists through global playlisting and off-platform initiatives. The program has been instrumental in amplifying the voices of over 200 female artists across the continent. South African singer Tyla remains the top EQUAL artist in Africa, with Ayra Starr, Amaarae, Qing Madi, FAVE, Simi, and Yemi Alade also making waves.

Female artists have played a pivotal role in pushing Afrobeats to new heights, with Tems gaining international recognition through collaborations with Rihanna and Beyoncé. Her performances at major global events like the North Sea Jazz Festival have helped elevate the genre on the world stage.

While progress is evident, Okumu emphasized that more work is needed to ensure better representation of female artists in global music rankings. However, Spotify’s data signals a positive trajectory for women in the African music industry, with the future looking bright for artists like Ayra Starr.
