Bambam Opens Up About Kidney Failure and Childbirth Trauma

Nigerian reality TV star and actress Bamike Olawunmi, popularly known as Bambam, has opened up about the terrifying health crisis she faced while giving birth to her first child, Zendaya, in 2020. She revealed that during labor, her kidney failed, and multiple organs began shutting down, putting both her and her baby’s lives at risk.

Speaking on the Me & My Girls podcast, Bambam recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the delivery. She explained that her daughter had detached from the placenta before birth, a critical complication that required urgent medical intervention. If she had arrived at the hospital just a second later, her baby could have suffered oxygen deprivation, leading to a stillbirth. The reality star described the fear and panic she felt as doctors rushed to save them both.

Beyond her personal experience, Bambam also shed light on the issue of medical negligence, highlighting how delayed actions by doctors and nurses contribute to stillbirths and maternal deaths. She stressed the need for improved healthcare services, calling for better training and swift response during emergencies to prevent such tragedies.

The traumatic experience left Bambam emotionally scarred, as she found herself consumed by “what if” scenarios that played over and over in her mind. She struggled with anxiety and fear long after the ordeal, unable to shake the thought of how close she came to losing her baby. Eventually, she sought therapy, which helped her process the trauma and shift her perspective from fear to gratitude.

Today, Bambam is using her platform to advocate for better maternal healthcare and to raise awareness about the dangers of childbirth complications. She hopes that by sharing her story, more women will seek proper medical care and support during pregnancy and delivery, reducing the risks that many mothers still face.
