Benue Varsity Lecturers Commence Indefinite Strike Amidst Management Dispute

ASUU Benue State University Chapter Embarks on Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter of Benue State University (BSU) has initiated an indefinite strike in response to the university management’s alleged failure to honor agreements with the lecturers.

Union’s Statement on Strike Commencement

In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Kwaghfan Tarnongo, Chairperson, and Comrade Terrumun Gajir, Secretary, the union announced the commencement of the strike, citing the university’s failure to fulfill its obligations to the lecturers.

Approval and Duration of the Strike

The union clarified that the national body of ASUU has approved the BSU chapter’s request to embark on the indefinite strike. The strike will persist until all demands, including the implementation and payment of accrued arrears of 2021, 2022, and 2023 promotions, as well as other outstanding entitlements, are met.

List of Demands

Among the demands outlined by the union are the payment of accrued salary arrears, resolution of salary discrepancies, implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, and the settlement of sundry allowances. The union emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the welfare of its members.

Management’s Alleged Breach of Agreement

The union accused the BSU management of breaching a tripartite agreement reached in January 2023, which stipulated increased funding to address issues such as promotions and annual increments. Despite the Benue Government’s compliance with its part of the agreement, the union alleges that the university management failed to fulfill its obligations, leading to the current strike action.

Implications of the Strike

The strike action, initiated by the union, highlights the growing tensions between lecturers and university management over unresolved issues. The union asserts that addressing these concerns is essential for fostering a conducive academic environment and ensuring the well-being of lecturers and staff members.
