Biopic on Feminist Icon Funmilayo Ransome Kuti Set to Hit Cinemas Nationwide on May 17, Trailer Released
The highly anticipated biopic “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” directed by Bolanle Austen Peters, is slated for nationwide release in cinemas on May 17, 2024, following its successful limited screening in 2023.
Originally premiered for a week-long screening from September 8 to September 14, 2023, at Silverbird Cinema in Victoria Island, Lagos, the film received praise and acclaim, particularly from the Anikulapo-Kuti family. This positive reception paved the way for its broader release this year.
The biopic chronicles the remarkable life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, from her groundbreaking achievements as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her partnership with Israel Ransome-Kuti. Together, they vehemently opposed injustice and established the Abeokuta Women’s Union, leading to a significant confrontation with traditional and colonial authorities who obstructed justice and equity.
Featuring stellar performances by industry veterans Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, as well as talented newcomers Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye, the film has already made a profound impact, earning two prestigious awards at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) for Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay.
