Bolaji Abdullahi’s Exit Shakes Kwara PDP

The resignation of former Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has created tension within the party in Kwara State. Although Abdullahi has not announced his next political move, his decision has left the party unsettled and raised concerns about its strength in the state.

Abdullahi’s departure comes at a time when opposition forces in Kwara are trying to realign against the current administration led by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. While the state PDP has not issued any major reactions, the party’s chairman, Tunde Mohammed, acknowledged Abdullahi’s contributions and expressed no ill will over his exit. Mohammed highlighted Abdullahi’s rise in politics under the guidance of Senator Bukola Saraki, who played a key role in his political career.

Abdullahi, who served as Commissioner for Education and later as Minister of Sports, also ran for governor in 2019 and recently contested for the Kwara Central Senatorial seat. Despite these achievements, sources suggest his resignation may stem from a strained relationship with Saraki, though the exact reasons remain unclear.

This development is significant as Abdullahi was seen as a key figure in Saraki’s political structure, which has faced challenges in recent years. The PDP’s loss of influence in the state began with the “O Toge” movement that swept Saraki’s camp out of power in 2019. Observers believe that Saraki’s absence from local politics during his tenure as Senate President contributed to the decline.

Abdullahi’s resignation has sparked speculation about his future plans and the potential impact on the PDP’s efforts to regain power. Some party members believe he felt sidelined, particularly after the party chose another candidate for the 2019 gubernatorial race and failed to support him financially during his senatorial campaign.

Despite Abdullahi’s exit, some believe reconciliation is still possible if party leaders act quickly to address his grievances. However, others feel his departure signals deeper issues within the party’s structure. Saraki’s leadership style and ability to rebuild the party will likely play a crucial role in determining its future.

As Kwara politics continues to evolve, the resignation of a prominent figure like Abdullahi raises questions about the PDP’s readiness for future elections. Whether the party can recover from this setback and rebuild its influence remains to be seen.
