Bologna Forward Joshua Zirkzee Eyes Super Eagles Call-Up
Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee has revealed his aspiration to represent Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, in the future.
Zirkzee, who currently plays for Bologna in Italy’s Serie A, is eligible to play for Nigeria through one of his parents. Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and a Nigerian mother, the 22-year-old has already represented his country of birth at various youth levels.
Despite his ties to the Netherlands, Zirkzee expressed keen interest in joining the Super Eagles, acknowledging the fierce competition within the Nigerian squad. Highlighting the talents of players like Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen and Osimhen from Napoli, Zirkzee emphasized the depth of attacking options available to Nigeria.
In an interview with Algemeen Dagblad via soccernews, Zirkzee stated, “Nigeria is not a country that you just choose because you cannot play for your homeland. The competition there for attackers is perhaps just as great as in the Dutch team.”
While Zirkzee remains committed to his international career, he expressed openness to representing Nigeria if given the opportunity. He acknowledged the possibility of receiving a call-up from the Nigerian Football Federation and expressed gratitude for the chance to play for the Super Eagles.
Zirkzee’s comments reflect his desire to explore all options for his international career, with aspirations to contribute to Nigeria’s footballing success on the global stage.
