Boston Officially Declares March 2nd as ‘Burna Boy Day’ to Honor Nigerian Musician
The city of Boston, Massachusetts, has formally declared March 2nd as “Burna Boy’s Day” in honor of the Nigerian musician, according to an official document from the Boston City Council signed by Councillor Ruthzee Louijeune.
The proclamation recognizes Burna Boy for his outstanding performances and advocacy efforts, highlighting Boston’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity through various events, festivals, and community initiatives. Burna Boy’s contributions are seen as emblematic of this commitment.
The document resolves that March 2, 2024, shall be officially recognized as Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston. It acknowledges Burna Boy’s platform, not only for entertainment but also for education and inspiration, starting conversations about social justice, equity, and representation.
Boston’s recognition of Burna Boy’s legacy is particularly significant given Nigeria’s status as the largest source of African immigration to the United States and Massachusetts being among the top 10 states with the highest Nigerian-born population.
Burna Boy has consistently drawn large audiences to his sold-out shows in Boston since gaining international prominence in 2018 with hits like ‘Like to Party’. His fifth album, ‘Twice As Tall’, further solidified his success, winning the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards in 2021.
The designation of Burna Boy Day serves as a reminder of the importance of amplifying voices that have long been silenced or overlooked, reflecting Boston’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating culture and diversity.
