CAN Chairman Urges Peaceful Engagement Amid Economic Hardship, Warns Against Violent Protests
Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the outgoing Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State, has issued a cautionary message urging Nigerians to refrain from resorting to violence during protests amid the prevailing economic challenges. His statement comes amidst a surge in demonstrations across the country over economic hardships and soaring costs of goods and services.
Hayab stressed the importance of peaceful protests, emphasizing that any form of violence or destruction of public property would only exacerbate Nigeria’s predicament. He highlighted the risk of genuine protests being hijacked by hoodlums and opportunistic groups, leading to further chaos and suffering for innocent citizens.
In his address titled “Addressing Nigeria’s Rising Cost Of Living Needs Wisdom,” Hayab acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians due to the skyrocketing prices of commodities. He urged citizens not to allow themselves to be manipulated into participating in street protests that could potentially undermine the nation’s progress and democratic gains.
Instead, Hayab called for unity among religious leaders, traditional rulers, stakeholders, and political leaders to collectively seek constructive solutions to the economic challenges facing the country. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts in finding a way forward, reminding Nigerians that poverty knows no boundaries and affects people across all demographics.
While acknowledging the present economic challenges, Hayab cautioned against solely blaming the current administration, urging Nigerians to work together towards addressing the root causes of the crisis and building a better future for all.
