Celebrities, Others Divided Over #Silhouette Challenge

The #SilhouetteChallege, which is probably January’s biggest TikTok trend, has become a source of controversy and entertainment, especially for those who do not find it offensive to show off their nudes and shocking sexual escapades. Social media challenges are not new. Over the years, celebrities and other notable personalities all over the world have partaken in trends either to promote a song, movie or a course. Some of the challenges are the Ice Bucket Challenge which had billionaires such as Bill Gates, and a former American President, George Bush, partaking in it. However some Nigerians have expressed concerns about the #SilhouetteChallenge, which they have labelled as vulgar, obscene, immoral and pornographic. The challenge involves posing in a lit doorway and dancing to Canadian American singer, Paul Anka’s 1987 song, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, before changing the light to red, revealing a black silhouette.

Meanwhile Pastor Adeboye, a respected cleric had highlighted the dangers of being attached to worldly contents online. Star actress, Funke Akindele, also stated that the #SilhouetteChallenge had no place on her social media handles. According to several reports, the #SilhouetteChallenge had had over 140 million views despite the controversies that had trailed it.
