Celine Dion Reveals 17-Year Battle with Stiff Person Syndrome

Canadian singer Celine Dion has revealed that she hid her struggle with Stiff Person Syndrome for 17 years before making it public. In an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today Show, Dion shared that she managed this illness while simultaneously dealing with her late husband Rene Angelil’s cancer battle and raising their children.

The 56-year-old singer, who first disclosed her diagnosis in 2022, admitted that her symptoms began as early as 2008. She explained, “We did not know what was going on [with me]. I did not take the time… I should have stopped, took the time to figure it out.”

Despite her own health issues, Dion had to be strong for her husband and children. “And like it wasn’t enough, my husband as well is fighting for his own life. I had to raise my kids, I had to hide, I had to try to be a hero – while feeling my body leaving me. [I was] holding on to my own dreams,” she continued.

The ‘Think Twice’ singer explained that she eventually decided to go public with her illness because keeping it a secret from her fans, whom she credited with her success, was a significant burden. Dion has recently described her experience with Stiff Person Syndrome as feeling like she’s “being strangled.” She added that she often suffers from severe cramps and has even broken ribs due to the condition.

Dion’s candid revelation highlights the immense personal and professional challenges she has faced over the years while dealing with this rare neurological disorder.
