CKay Opens Up About Challenges with Collaboration and Recognition in Nigerian Music Industry

Nigerian singer CKay has candidly shared his experiences of facing reluctance from some of his colleagues when seeking collaboration opportunities, shedding light on the intricacies of the music industry and the challenges artists encounter despite their success.

In the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, CKay revealed his aspirations to capitalize on the global success of his hit track “Love Nwantiti.” However, he encountered setbacks when attempting to collaborate with fellow artists, highlighting the complexities of navigating relationships within the music industry.

Expressing his frustration, CKay lamented the lack of recognition for “Love Nwantiti” in Nigerian award ceremonies, despite the song’s remarkable achievements, including over a billion streams and numerous accolades abroad. He questioned the integrity and fairness of award systems, both domestically and internationally, casting doubt on the transparency of the selection process.

“I have my reservations about awards in general. Because I feel there’s so much involved. And the people who run the awards, I don’t know them or their motives. I have seen so many situations where music that is deserving doesn’t get any recognition. Not just the Grammys, even [Nigerian awards] back home,” CKay articulated.

CKay’s revelations offer insights into the complexities and dynamics of the music industry, where success and recognition do not always guarantee smooth collaborations or widespread acknowledgment.
