Court Delays Hearing on Obasa’s Removal as Lagos Speaker Until March 17

A Lagos High Court has postponed the hearing of a lawsuit filed by reinstated Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his removal. Justice Yetunde Pinheiro adjourned the case to March 17, 2025, ruling that all applications and processes will be heard together.

During the court session, lead counsel for the Lagos Assembly, Femi Falana (SAN), informed the judge that he had received additional affidavits from Obasa’s legal team, led by Afolabi Fasanu (SAN), on March 10, 2025. The counsel representing former Speaker Mojisola Meranda, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), also noted that the new filings contained serious fraud allegations against his client, requiring him to respond before proceedings could continue.

In another development, Olusola Idowu (SAN), newly appointed counsel for the Lagos Assembly, announced his representation in the case. Falana urged the court to first consider the application for a change of counsel, citing a Court of Appeal ruling that requires lower courts to address such matters before other applications. The judge agreed, stating that all legal motions, including those challenging the court’s jurisdiction and requests for injunctions, would be addressed together on the next adjourned date.
