Daddy Showkey Recounts Near-Death Experience with Gang in Ikorodu

Veteran Nigerian singer Daddy Showkey has shared a harrowing account of his near-death experience during his youth, when he was involved in gang activities in Ikorodu, Lagos State. Speaking on a teaser for the upcoming episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, the music icon recounted the terrifying moment when he and his gang were nearly lynched by an angry mob.

Daddy Showkey revealed that his troubles began when he and some other young men discovered a gun in a refuse dump. Emboldened by their find, they began to use the weapon to terrorize the local community. Their reign of fear came to a sudden halt one fateful day when their activities caught up with them.

“One day, when we were out in our usual style, someone saw us and started screaming, ‘thieves, thieves, thieves.’ Then we started running, but we were apprehended. They tied us up. They were about to burn us but we were saved miraculously,” he recalled.

The veteran singer described the moment they were captured and tied up, ready to be set ablaze by the enraged crowd. However, a miraculous turn of events spared their lives at the last minute. Reflecting on this dark chapter of his life, Daddy Showkey emphasized that if he could rise from such a tumultuous past to achieve legendary status, then there is hope for anyone willing to work towards greatness.

“I am a living testimony for every young person, because if I can be alive today and still become Daddy Showkey, then there’s hope for everyone,” he stated.

Tragically, not all his former gang members were as fortunate. Daddy Showkey disclosed that one of his comrades was later caught and lynched to death, underscoring the perilous environment they navigated during their youth.

Daddy Showkey’s story is a powerful reminder of the potential for redemption and the possibility of achieving success despite a troubled past.
