Disney’s ‘Iwájú’: How Nigerian Creators Teamed Up with Disney for Sci-Fi Series

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Nigerian creators joined forces with Disney to produce ‘Iwájú,’ a futuristic sci-fi series set in Lagos, marking Disney’s first external animation studio partnership.

The journey began in 2015 when Olufikayo “Ziki” Adeolu and Toluwalakin “Tolu” Olowofoyekun founded Kugali Media, inspired by their shared passion for storytelling and digital design. Their paths converged with Hamid Ibrahim, a visionary visual effects designer from Uganda, and Kugali Media was born.

Through their platform, which included a popular podcast discussing digital design and storytelling in Africa, the trio caught the attention of Disney’s chief creative officer, Jennifer Lee, who was impressed by their ambition and talent.

Recognizing the potential for collaboration, Disney partnered with Kugali Media to bring ‘Iwájú’ to life. The six-part series, set in Lagos, explores a futuristic world where technology and tradition intersect.

Scheduled for release on February 28, 2024, on Disney Plus, ‘Iwájú’ promises to captivate audiences with its immersive storytelling and rich cultural elements. Alongside the series, Disney has launched an array of ‘Iwájú’ branded merchandise, a video game, and a documentary, underscoring its commitment to amplifying diverse voices in storytelling.

While Disney Plus is not yet available in Nigeria, ‘Iwájú’ will air on the Disney channel on DSTV starting April 22, offering Nigerian viewers a chance to experience the groundbreaking series.

The project represents a significant milestone for Nigerian creators and the Afro-animation industry, providing a platform to showcase authentic stories rooted in African culture. With a cast comprising Nigerian talent and a storyline that reflects the complexities of Lagos life, ‘Iwájú’ is poised to make a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.

For the creators, including writer and director Ziki Adeola and CEO of Kugali Media, Hamid Ibrahim, ‘Iwájú’ is more than just a series—it’s a love letter to Lagos, a celebration of African storytelling, and a testament to the power of collaboration.

As ‘Iwájú’ takes flight with the backing of Disney, it signals a new era for Nollywood and animated storytelling in Nigeria, paving the way for future generations of creators to share their stories with the world.
