EU to Finalize Response to Trump Tariffs by April End
The European Union (EU) is set to announce its response to the new tariffs expected from the United States by the end of April, according to French government spokeswoman Sophie Primas.
Following a cabinet meeting, Primas outlined a two-phase response:
- Mid-April: The EU will react to existing US tariffs on steel and aluminum.
- End of April: A sector-by-sector analysis will guide a coordinated European response.
French President Emmanuel Macron will discuss the situation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to ensure a united EU stance. However, European Commission trade spokesman Olof Gill emphasized that France does not speak for the EU on trade matters.
US President Donald Trump is expected to announce new “Liberation Day” tariffs on Wednesday at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT), potentially affecting global trade relations.
Von der Leyen has been engaging with EU leaders to formulate a collective strategy, ensuring a strong and unified reaction from Europe.
