Ex-SGF Mustapha Denies Involvement in Alleged $6.2m Payment for Foreign Election Observers
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has testified in the ongoing trial of Godwin Emefiele, ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), denying involvement in the alleged payment of $6.2 million for foreign election observers.
Mustapha, serving as the fifth prosecution witness, distanced himself and former President Muhammadu Buhari from writing letters to the CBN for the release of the funds. He emphasized that he was unaware of the transaction during his tenure as SGF.
Testifying before Justice Hamza Muazu, Mustapha disputed the authenticity of documents presented in court, stating that they did not originate from the Office of the President or the SGF. He highlighted inconsistencies in the documents and signature discrepancies.
Additionally, Mustapha refuted knowledge of a person named Jubrin Abubakar, who allegedly collected the funds on behalf of the SGF’s office. He clarified that no funds were brought to his office, further denying involvement in the forgery and distribution of the money.
The case has been adjourned for further trial, with parties agreeing to reconvene on March 7, 11, and 25.
