Falz Reflects on Career Lessons and New Musical Journey

Nigerian rapper, actor, and lawyer Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana recently shared insights into his decade-long career in the entertainment industry, revealing the key lessons he has learned along the way. Falz, who was called to the bar in 2012, briefly worked at his father’s law chambers before fully embracing his passion for music and acting. Since launching his career in 2014, Falz has become a prominent figure in Nigeria’s entertainment scene, known for his diverse talents.

In an interview with *The Nation*, Falz reflected on his journey, emphasizing the importance of pursuing one’s passions. He noted, “A big lesson I’ve learned is to do everything I’ve always wanted to do. If there’s something you’re passionate about and can be good at, pursue it. If I had restricted myself earlier in my career, I probably wouldn’t be the brand I am today.” Falz highlighted how his willingness to explore different creative avenues has shaped him into the multifaceted artist he is now.

After a brief hiatus from music, Falz returned with a fresh perspective, releasing an Extended Play (EP) titled *Before The Feast* in 2024. He explained that the project represents a departure from his usual politically and socially charged themes, focusing instead on creating a more uplifting and intentional sound. “On this project, I’m not doing much of the social or political commentary that I typically do. There are socially conscious lyrics, but not particularly about the affairs of the country,” Falz stated, adding that he wants to convey a positive mindset to his listeners.

Falz also discussed the challenges of running an independent record label, particularly the high costs associated with music promotion. He praised fellow artist Iyanya for highlighting the financial demands of the industry, acknowledging that the expense of marketing music can be discouraging for many talented artists.

Looking ahead, Falz expressed his desire to introduce new sounds to the Nigerian music scene, moving away from the repetitive trends that have dominated Afro-pop in recent years. He believes that his upcoming projects will encourage listeners to embrace a broader range of musical styles, staying true to the diverse creative roots of African music.
