Family Confirms Onyeka Onwenu’s Burial Before Month’s End

The family of the iconic Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu has announced that her burial will take place before the end of this month. This announcement was made during a condolence visit by the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) at Onwenu’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Onwenu, who was a prominent member of MCSN, tragically passed away last Tuesday following a performance at a birthday party. Her sudden demise has left a significant impact on her fans and the music community.

During the visit, Orits Wiliki, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of MCSN, led the delegation. Onwenu’s sons, Abram and Tjiani, shared their commitment to honoring their mother’s wishes by ensuring her remains are laid to rest promptly. They mentioned that detailed burial arrangements would be announced in the coming days.

In the condolence register, legendary musician King Sunny Ade expressed his deep sorrow, writing, “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.” His heartfelt message reflects the widespread grief and admiration for Onwenu’s legacy.

Onyeka Onwenu had previously expressed her wishes regarding her burial in a 2021 opinion piece on Premium Times. She emphasized that her burial should be simple and devoid of excessive fanfare. “Do it quickly, quietly and privately. Mourn, yes but not excessively. As the family prepares for the final farewell, they remain dedicated to fulfilling Onwenu’s wishes, ensuring that her legacy is honored with dignity and respect.
