Femi Kuti Encourages Nigerians to Stay and Fight for a Better Future

Femi Kuti, the renowned Nigerian singer, has called on Nigerian youth to resist the trend of mass emigration, often referred to as the “japa” trend, and instead stay to fight for the future of the country. His appeal came during the 2024 Felebration festival, where he passionately urged Nigerians to recognize their role in improving the nation.

During his speech, Kuti shared that he has no intention of leaving Nigeria, despite the difficult circumstances many face. He pointed out that the countries Nigerians frequently move to, such as Europe and America, did not become great by people running away but by citizens staying to fight for their freedom and development. He emphasized the importance of understanding the struggles those countries endured, mentioning how Europe fought hundreds of civil wars and how America’s history is marked by one of the bloodiest civil wars in history. “Do you think they ran away?” Kuti asked rhetorically, driving home the point that change comes from within.

Kuti also reminded Nigerians of their responsibility to make the country a better place. He encouraged the youth to recognize that they play a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s future. He proudly pointed out that the iconic Fela Shrine was built in Africa, not in Europe or America, as a symbol of commitment to the continent. “This country depends on you,” Kuti asserted, calling on Nigerians to stay and work toward building the nation they want to see.

Using his own family as an example, Kuti highlighted his son Made, who holds British citizenship but continues to live and work in Nigeria. Kuti stressed that even with opportunities abroad, his son recognizes the importance of being in Nigeria to carry on their legacy. He jokingly mentioned his desire to retire and asked who would take over the shrine if everyone left the country. His message was clear: while opportunities abroad might seem tempting, there is a greater need to build and invest in the future of Nigeria.
