FG Deploys Security Agents as NLC Insists on Protest Over Telecom Tariff Hike
The Federal Government has deployed security agents to protect telecom infrastructure as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) remains firm on its planned protest against the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) warned that shutting down telecom services could pose national security risks. The agency has stationed operatives at base stations to prevent any interference with telecommunications infrastructure.
The NLC, however, insists on its March 1 protest, accusing telecom operators of breaching public trust by implementing the tariff hike before a review panel’s deliberations. The union also called on Nigerians to boycott major telecom providers, including MTN, Airtel, and Glo, for a few hours daily until the end of February.
Despite warnings from the NSCDC, the NLC maintains that its actions are necessary to protect citizens from economic exploitation. Lagos NLC Chairperson, Funmi Sessi, dismissed the security threats, emphasizing that the union would not be intimidated.
Telecom industry bodies, including the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), have criticized the planned protest, arguing that rising operational costs justify the tariff increase.
With tensions escalating, the NSCDC has urged dialogue to prevent disruptions that could impact national security and the economy.
