Former Lawmaker Shehu Sani Blames Buhari for Nigeria’s Economic Woes
Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has attributed Nigeria’s current economic challenges to the policies of former President Muhammadu Buhari. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sani emphasized that Buhari’s administration fundamentally undermined the Nigerian economy.
Sani pointed out that the economic policies currently implemented by President Bola Tinubu, particularly the removal of petrol subsidy and forex rate unification, were supposed to be enacted by Buhari. He criticized Buhari for failing to implement these policies, which, according to him, led to the deterioration of the economy.
The former senator absolved Tinubu of responsibility for the economic situation, stating that Tinubu had been transparent about his intentions during his campaign. He noted that Tinubu had openly declared his plans to remove subsidies and had received electoral support based on this promise.
Regarding the recent protests against Tinubu’s policies, Sani acknowledged the rights of Nigerians to protest but cautioned against unorganized civil society demonstrations. He differentiated between legitimate protests by organized groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress and potentially chaotic gatherings by unorganized entities.
The ongoing protests highlight public discontent over the economic challenges facing Nigeria, with concerns centered on the removal of petrol subsidies and changes in forex policies. Sani’s remarks shed light on the political dynamics surrounding Nigeria’s economic landscape, underscoring the complexities of governance and policy implementation.
