Grandma Excited As Michaela Onyenwere Gets Drafted Into WNBA

After the New York Liberty selected Michaela Onyenwere with the sixth pick in the 2021 WNBA draft, her grandmother stole the show in the background of her first interview as a pro.

When your granddaughter gets taken No. 6 overall in the WNBA draft, you’ve got to celebrate. That was clearly going through Michaela Onyenwere’s grandmother’s mind after the 21-year-old was drafted by the New York Liberty on Thursday night’s WNBA draft.

During ESPN’s cutaway to interview Onyenwere after being drafted by the Liberty, the world got a great look at who she was celebrating the special occasion with. And folks, her family did not disappoint. Between the packed house, the outfits, and the enthusiasm, Onyenwere’s family was the star of the show during the interview.

Especially Onyenwere’s grandmother, who is absolutely worth watching this clip over and over for.

Michaela Nne Onyenwere ( born August 10, 1999) is an American women’s basketball player with the UCLA Bruins of the Pac-12 Conference.

Onyenwere was a 2017 McDonald’s High School All-American. Following the 2017–18 season, Onyenwere was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.[1]

In the 2018–19 season, Onyenwere’s sophomore season, she was named to the All-Pac-12 team and to the Media All-Pac-12 team, and she ranked second in the Pac-12 for offensive rebounds per game. After that season, she earned on a spot on the 2019 U.S. Pan-American Games Women’s Basketball Team.
