Having sex in swimming pool dangerous, can lead to infections, expert warns

A professor of public health, Tanimola Akande, has warned Nigerians against having sex in swimming pools, noting that it is dangerous to health.

Prof. Akande said having sex underwater can increase the risk of Sexually Transmitted Infections, vaginal irritations, and Urinary Tract Infections.

He also said such an act could lead to accidental pregnancies.

Speaking in an interview, the don said while engaging in sex in a swimming pool provides some pleasure, it increases the risk of drowning especially for those who are not good at swimming.

“Engaging in sex in swimming pool while it provides some pleasure, it is however with risk of sexually transmitted infections and higher chances of vaginal irritation and urinary tract infections.

“The risk is particularly higher with those who engage in it in public swimming pools.

“It also increases the risk of drowning in swimming pool for those who are not quite good at swimming.”

He, however, said the health implications of engaging in sex in bathtubs are not as much but also associated with risk if it is not a private bathtub.

On if cleaning agents used in pools pose any health risk, the expert said if the appropriate dosage is used, it should not constitute a health risk except for those allergic to such chemicals.

In an article published online by Healthline, an obstetrician, and gynaecologist, Jackie Walters said water reduces the effectiveness of condoms.

“External latex condoms are likely to slip off when used in the water, and dental dams can easily slip,” says Jackie. “There’s also the possibility of water getting trapped between the barrier and the body, which loosens them, increases the risk of slippage or rips, and thus reduces its effectiveness.

“And if the barrier is latex, oil-based products often used on the poolside (i.e., sunscreen, bath oils, and body lotions) ruin their effectiveness.

“If you’re using a condom, I would recommend putting it on outside of the water,” says Jackie.

And if you’re using a dental dam, she recommends having the receiver of oral sex sit on the ledge of the pool where it may be less likely to slip.
